In the beginning….
Wine is nothing new to Australia, in fact it is as old as settlement itself. The first vines were brought to Sydney from Rio de Janeiro in 1788 by Governor Phillip and planted at Farm Cove. By 1832 Australia was home to some 365 different varities of grape (thank god we sorted that one out) and the industry was building from its humble roots, to what it was to become today – a producer of some of the world’s finest new world wines.
However, it is only in the last decade or so that Australians have really begun to appreciate wine. We owe this to the determination and fortitude of many pioneers who laboured under immense difficulties to give us one of the great fruits of the earth. These pioneers battles against the odds to find the right soils, right sites, and struggled through the phylloxera outbreak in the 1800’s, - and we salute them for this.
Australia has blessed us with the climate and soil, while the generations before us have left us with some gnarly old vines with the ability to produce powerful and complex wines.
Our Ethos….
We believe wine in Australia is something special, and something that should be celebrated and appreciated. We are committed to finding and bringing to our customers wines that reflect our heritage, wines that express our unique terroir, wines that deliver quality and value, and the wonderful boutique wines, that by no fault of their own, are not represented by the retail trade.
Did you know?….
· Two companies in Australia make up close to HALF or our wine sales
· The top 22 companies make up 90% of our wines sales
· There are more than 2200 producers fighting for 10% of the pie!
What does it mean to you?
While more and more bottle shops are being bought up and run by the chains, more and more consumers are being forced to buy the same, mass produced wines (this applies to food and produce as well), and missing out on a world of amazing wine.
Yes there is a place in the market for mass produced, cheap wine. But why are we drinking wine in the first place? Personally we think it is for pleasure and enjoyment, and therefore it should be enjoyable and an experience.
Australia’s boutique producers are making some amazing wines. Wines with character. Wines touched by human hands (and sometimes feet). Wines that offer amazing value. Wines that offer a new experience.
We try hundreds of wines each year, and select only the very best to bring to you, the consumer. We aim to do this in an unpretentious manner, without intimidation or wine snobbery – after all, wine is made to be enjoyed.
