2018 Noah ‘ROSSONOAH’ Coste della Sesia DOC 

2018 saw the ROSSONOAH fall under the DOC Coste della Sesia – a classification that the inaugural 2017 vintage could have proudly displayed on its label but due to the circumstances in which ROSSONAH was born, Andrea chose to declassify it to “Vino Rosso”. Again we have 50% young vine Nebbiolo from Bramaterra and 40% old vine Croatina. The colour is even brighter and more ruby than the 2017 if that was even possible. Im always floored when trying this wine as the price does not do it justice. There is without doubt a playfulness to the wine and drink ability is off the charts but it still has a sense of place and brooding mineral drive. Its unmistakably northern Italian in its DNA and does not disappoint. Langhe Nebbiolo has a target on its back!

2017 Noah ‘ROSSONOAH’  Vino Rosso 

Andrea’s vineyards were ravaged by hail in 2016, compensating with extra vigor in 2017—particularly among the young Nebbiolo vines he had planted in 2012. It occurred to Andrea that these exuberant young vines might marry interestingly with a parcel of 70-year-old maggiorina-trained Croatina he had previously vinified and bottled separately (see below), and thus ROSSONOAH was born. Comprising 50% young-vines Nebbiolo, 40% old-vines Croatina, and 10% Vespolina, it is a perfect rendering of the Alto Piemonte in miniature. One senses the strict mineral discipline of Bramaterra’s volcanic rock, the savory beam of high-tension-wire fruit, and the high-toned aromatics fostered by these northerly slopes, yet its texture is supple and approachable, its structure friendly rather than imposing. Andrea employed a relatively brief 10-day maceration without excessive extraction in order to preserve the wine’s sense of freshness, with vinification occurring in stainless steel and aging taking place in large Slavonian cask for one year. The wine deftly balances serious terroir articulation,and the overall impression is one of lip-smacking resonance on the palate.”

Petit Chamblis

Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel describes the 2018 vintage as one that “had a hot and extremely dry growing season which at least had the benefit of limiting the disease pressure. Thankfully the yields were abundant or we might have made unduly heavy wines more in the style of 2003. I chose to begin picking on the 4th of September and continued until the 11th under very warm conditions that made it crystal clear that it was necessary to pick quickly, in fact so much so it was necessary to hire extra harvesters. We were aided considerably by the fact that everything was ripe and clean so pickers didn’t lose any time having to sort. We pressed as we normally do and yields were much better than what we obtained in 2016 and 2017 and ranged from 60 to 80 hl/ha though they, somewhat quixotically, were lower in the young vines as they suffered some hydric stress. By contrast the quality was outstanding from our older vine parcels that had the deep root systems that were much better adapted to dealing with the drought-like conditions. Potential alcohols were mostly in the 12.5 to 13% range though the highest reached 13.7% and the fermentations took a long time to finish. Despite the warm season the post-malo pHs were actually pretty good coming in as they did between 3.2 and 3.25. Another interesting aspect of the 2018 vintage is that despite the generous yields the wines seem quite dense, indeed blind I would never guess that these wines came from a higher yield vintage.

Tasting Notes

Bright, fresh, peachy, flinty, and raring to go. Cool flavour, but good ripeness, brine and green olive, some savoury yoghurt sort of stuff in there too. Like this. Going glass to glass is effortless. 93 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

A fruity nose speaks of grapefruit, quinine and a whiff of the exotic. The racy and delicious flavors possess a subtle minerality that adds a touch of lift to the refreshing if not especially complex finish.
